General requirements that apply to all equine-assisted therapy programs
What is the patient's age?Programs are available for patients 2 years of age and older.

Medical Considerations
Certain conditions require physician clearance or may affect program eligibility
Does the patient have Down Syndrome or juvenile rheumatoid arthritis?If yes, Atlantoaxial Instability (AAI) must be ruled out by physician X-ray before mounted therapy.

Behavioral & Sensory Readiness
Safety considerations for working in an equine environment
Is the patient able to follow simple directions for their own safety?Patients do not need to be verbal. The ability to respond to basic cues is sufficient.

Has the patient experienced suicidal ideation or self-harm?Many of our clients come to LifeStriders after working through these challenges at other programs. This helps us recommend the right starting point.
Are these symptoms currently active, or have they stabilized?

Is there a documented history of fire-setting or animal cruelty?Our programs take place in a barn environment with live therapy horses. This helps us ensure a safe setting for everyone involved.

Physical & Functional Capacity
Safety participation requirements for mounted therapy
Can the patient sit upright, with or without physical support?The patient does not need to sit independently. Many of our riders use adaptive support. This question helps us understand whether seated activities, including gentle movement, are tolerable and pain-free.

Does the patient have limited hip mobility or high muscle tone (hypertonia) in the hips or legs?Many of our clients have high muscle tone or limited range of motion and benefit greatly from therapeutic riding. Our therapy team evaluates positioning and horse selection during intake.

Does the patient have enough neck strength to safely support the weight of a helmet during rhythmic movement?Some minimal neck control is required for mounted sessions. Unmounted programs do not require this.
